| The History of the Hamburger The hamburger originated on the Russian steppe, were medieval Tartars ate raw meat seasoned with salt, pepper and onion juice. German sailors enjoyed the delicacy at Baltic ports and took the recipe back home to Hamburg. Residents of that city, not accustomed to eating their meat raw, took some of the red out of steak tartar by broiling outside, thus the Hamburg steak was born. |

| In 1890, Louis Lassen introduced the American
Hamburg steak at his lunch wagon in between two slices of bread. During
the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Expo, held in St. Louis, hungry crowds were
served broiled beef patties between buns – the “American-style”
hamburger had finally arrived. By this time Henry Ford had put the country on wheels and Americans quickly picked up the habit of eating on the run. Hamburger stands went up all around the country, and a side industry of condiments-ketchup and relish – grew and prospered.
